BROCCOLI raab, Rapini SEEDS
DESCRIPTION & NUTRITIONAL VALUE
Rapini or broccoli rabe is a green cruciferous vegetable, with the leaves, buds, and stems all being edible; the buds somewhat resemble broccoli, but do not form a large head. Rapini is known for its slightly bitter taste, and is particularly associated with Mediterranean cuisine.
Broccoli rabe is jam-packed with a wide range of nutrients including vitamins (like A, C, K) and minerals (like potassium, calcium, and iron). Adding this vegetable to your diet can certainly deliver a real health kick and promote overall well-being.
how to plant at home
Rapini is a Mediterranean vegetable that likes cool to warm weather and low humidity.
*Rapini is best started direct from seed in the garden or in the full-size 18-24″ deep container you plan to grow it in.(However, if necessary, you can start it in cells, pots, soil blocks and transplant it after risk of frost as long as you don’t disturb the roots in the process. Also, make sure to transplant or pot up before the root outgrows the original planting medium.)
*This plant will germinate at temperatures as low as 55℉. However, best germination rates occur between 65-75℉. Germination takes between 3-10 days depending on your conditions.
*Plant seeds to a depth of 1/8th to 1/4th inch deep. You can also sow on the surface and cover with a light layer of compost.
*Rapini grows best in deep, fertile soil stocked with lots of organic matter. The ideal soil pH is 6.0-7.0.
How To Serve
*Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Set up an ice bath nearby. Place half of the broccoli rabe into the boiling water and cook for 1 minute, then remove with tongs to the ice bath to stop cooking. Repeat with remaining broccoli rabe. Place broccoli rabe into a large colander to drain.
*Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-low heat, and lightly oil grate.
*Whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, crushed red pepper flakes, and salt in a small bowl. Toss drained broccoli rabe with oil mixture, then place onto hot grate.
*Grill, turning occasionally, until thick stems have softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove thinner leafy pieces as they become done to prevent burning. Remove to a serving platter.
